Why?
There is more than one artist with this name:
1.: A band from Oakland, California who play both indie rock and alternative hip-hop
2. A folk rock band from England active in the 1990s. 1) WHY? is an American hip-hop indie rock band based out of Oakland, California, USA originally only featuring Jonathan "Yoni" Wolf. It has since gone on to include Doug McDiarmid, Austin Brown, and Yoni's brother Josiah Wolf. They are one of the founding groups of the anticon record label of Oakland, California.
Babybird
Babybird was a British indie band, formed in 1995. The band was fronted by Stephen Jones, who has also released records as a solo artist, using his own name and the name Baby Bird. Jones had begun writing songs and recording home demos as part of an experimental theatre group in Sheffield. A collection of these demos (I Was Born a Man) was released in the summer of 1995, under the name Baby Bird.
The Magnetic Fields
The Magnetic Fields is a New York-based group fronted by Stephin Merritt. Recent albums released under the name "The Magnetic Fields" usually consist of synth-pop music in a 1980s style underlying clever lyrics which are often heavily ironic. While synth-pop often forms the foundation of their music, The Magnetic Fields' music borrows from many other styles, notably country, folk and indie pop. The band was originally formed in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1990 by friends Merritt and (percussionist/pianist/vocalist) Claudia Gonson.
Islands
Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Islands is a 6 piece band founded by former The Unicorns frontman Nick Thorburn (briefly taking the stage name "Nick Diamonds") and drummer J'Aime Tambeur. Following the untimely disbandment of The Unicorns as they teetered on the brink of breaking through, Islands' debut release entitled Return to the Sea, with its quirky sounds and refreshing, catchy melodies includes collaborations with members of Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade.
Welcome
Hailing from Seattle, but arriving seemingly out of nowhere, Welcome are both distinct and familiar, at once drawing the listener in, and suggesting worlds of possibilities. An essentially traditional line-up of guitar, bass, drums, dual (often double-tracked) vocals, and a couple of guitars (admittedly augmented by some unconventional home made pedals and FX), they manage to wrench or coax new shapes at will.
